Lot 592: A Late Victorian Mahogany Cased Banjo Barometer
A late Victorian mahogany-cased wheel or banjo barometer of traditional form. The shaped mahogany case features scrolled shoulders and a corresponding scrolled base, accented with a bone or ivory setting knob situated to the right of the dial. The instrument is fitted with an approximately 8-inch circular silvered brass dial, engraved with weather indications including Stormy, Much Rain, Rainy, Change, Fair, Set Fair, and Very Dry, alongside a barometric scale graduated from 28 to 31 inches. The dial is equipped with a central steel pointer and a secondary brass manually-adjustable setting hand. Inset into the neck of the case is a mercury-in-glass thermometer with a silvered scale, protected by a glazed cover. No maker’s name or signature is discernible on the dial or scales.
