Lot 603: A Victorian Mahogany Cased Sikes's Hydrometer by Loftus, London
A Victorian brass Sikes’s hydrometer set manufactured by W.R. Loftus, London. The instrument is housed in its original mahogany case, which features decorative stringing and an inset bone or ivory maker’s plaque inscribed SIKES’S HYDROMETER, LOFTUS, 6 BEAUFOY TERRACE, LONDON. The set comprises a brass hydrometer with a weighted bulb and graduated stem, a thermometer with a brass and boxwood scale marked LOFTUS LONDON, and an assortment of seven brass weights with a small cap. The thermometer scale is graduated from 30 to 110 degrees. The case is constructed from mahogany with brass hinges and is lined internally with dark blue velvet, moulded to accommodate the various components. The interior of the lid shows residue from previously attached paper labels.
