Lot 662: A Pair of Contemporary Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll Sets
This lot consists of two sets of hand-painted wooden Russian nesting dolls, known as matryoshka. The first set is a traditional design featuring figures decorated in blue floral shawls and yellow headscarves. This set is housed in its original retail packaging, which bears the printed text Hand made in Russia, A Gift of friendship & love…, and MATRYOSHKA The Original Russian Doll. The second set is an animal-themed collection depicting owls, with hand-painted plumage details in shades of brown, tan, and black. Each set comprises five pieces of decreasing size that nest within one another. No artist signatures, factory marks, or Cyrillic inscriptions are visible on the base of the dolls or the packaging. A white paper auction label from Liskeard Auction Rooms for Lot 662 is attached to the exterior of the floral set’s box.
