Lot 987: Julius (20th Century), Mediterranean Harbour Scene, Signed and Dated 74
An oil painting on canvas-textured board depicting a Mediterranean harbour scene at sunset, likely representing the town of Rovinj. The composition features several moored fishing vessels in the foreground with a coastal town in the background, dominated by a prominent church tower resembling the Church of St. Euphemia. The work is executed in a mid-20th-century impressionistic style, utilising palette knife techniques to create texture in the architecture and water reflections, while employing sgraffito to define the masts and rigging. The painting is signed in a maroon pigment to the lower right corner Julius 74. It is housed in a traditional dark-stained, moulded wooden frame with a gilded inner slip. Auction labels are present on the front of the frame, including a printed sticker from HCP Auctions South West for Lot 987 and a handwritten slip marked 938.
