Lot 359: Afghan Mauri Style Hand-Knotted Red Wool Rug
This hand-knotted oriental rug is worked in the Afghan Mauri style, featuring a deep red field. The design incorporates two vertical rows of repeating gul medallions, each displaying geometric motifs in navy blue, cream, and dark brown. The central field is framed by multiple concentric borders, including a primary border of repeating latch-hook and diamond patterns, surrounded by narrower geometric guard stripes. The rug is constructed with a wool pile on a wool foundation, demonstrating the dense weave characteristic of the Mauri tradition. It is finished with short cream-coloured fringes at the ends. A small inventory tag bearing the handwritten number 359 is attached to the corner.
Condition report:
The rug is in very good condition with a thick and even pile throughout. There are no significant signs of wear, fading, or staining visible. The fringes and side edges are well-preserved and appear structurally sound.
