Lot 420: A Japanese Imari Porcelain Square Footed Platter Featuring Traditional Peacock and Floral Motifs
A large Japanese porcelain serving platter of square lobed form with a slightly raised foot, produced for the export market. The dish is decorated in the vibrant Imari palette with underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels in iron red, green, and yellow, enhanced with extensive gilding. The central square reserve depicts a lush arrangement of peonies and floral sprays set against a stylized blue scholar’s rock. This is surrounded by a broad border containing four shaped panels, each featuring a peacock in flight amongst flowering branches, separated by dense brocade patterns of chrysanthemums and scrolling foliage. The scalloped rim is finished with a dark blue band containing gilded scrolls and red circular motifs. The reverse features a square red printed seal mark accompanied by the word JAPAN in red capital letters. The characters within the seal read Gomaru Kinsei, translating to Respectfully made by Gomaru. This mark identifies the piece as an export item dating from the early to mid-20th century, typically between the late Meiji and early Showa eras.
