Lot 478: Two silver toned novelty items including a solid silver shell-shaped box and a mother-of-pearl pendant
This lot comprises two small decorative items of marine-inspired design. The first is a hinged box fashioned in the form of a bivalve scallop shell. The piece features a naturalistic ribbed texture and scalloped edges, with a simple hinge mechanism at the rear. The interior of the box shows significant tarnish with some iridescent toning. While similar items are often attributed to British manufacturers such as Barker Bros Ltd or Cheltenham, no maker’s marks or hallmarks are visible on this example. The second item is a small pendant or charm in the shape of a fan or shell, characteristic of Victorian or Edwardian novelty jewellery. It consists of radial ribs set with small white spherical beads, possibly seed pearls or mother-of-pearl. The pendant is topped with a decorative silver-plated cap featuring embossed scrollwork and foliate motifs, fitted with a suspension loop. No hallmarks are visible on either piece.
