Lot 524: A Collection of Carved Wood and Decorative Animal Figurines including Netsuke
An assortment of decorative animal figurines and carvings executed in various materials. The collection includes a hand-carved hardwood hippopotamus with a polished finish and visible grain, accompanied by a smaller hippopotamus carved from a dark, dense wood. A miniature elephant figurine is featured in an off-white material with incised floral and geometric patterns. The lot also contains an off-white netsuke-style carving of a reclining animal, possibly a boar or pig, with dark stained details for the eyes. Further items include a small metal figurine of a seated animal with a heavy green verdigris patina and a polished brown teardrop-shaped toggle or pendant with an integrated suspension loop. These pieces reflect diverse carving traditions, including Japanese netsuke-style works and woodcraft characteristic of East African souvenir production. No maker’s marks, signatures, or factory stamps were observed on any of the items.
