Lot 795: An Assortment of Antique Hand-Painted Glazed Ceramic House Tiles and Fragments in a Wooden Display Rack
A collection of hand-painted glazed earthenware tiles and fragments presented in a three-tier wooden display rack. The collection comprises two distinct styles. The first group consists of large square and rectangular tiles with a pale blue-tinted glaze, featuring bold dark blue calligraphic characters and symbols, including an ampersand. Several of these tiles are in fragmentary form. The second group comprises smaller rectangular tiles featuring dark blue capital letters, including R, T, U, B, E, L, and I. These are decorated with hand-painted floral and foliate borders in orange, green, and brown on a white ground. The glaze across the collection shows characteristic fine crazing. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible.
