Lot 119: A Trio of Vintage British 2-Gallon Petrol Cans Including National Benzole Mixture Pratts and Esso Style Circa 1920s-1940s
A collection of three vintage British two-gallon petrol or motor spirit cans from the early to mid-twentieth century. The collection comprises one National Benzole Mixture can finished in red with embossed lettering picked out in yellow paint; one green Pratts can featuring the name embossed within a circular motif on the front and Pratts Perfection Spirit embossed on the side panel; and one red-painted can featuring a hand-painted Esso logo within an oval and rectangular border. Each container is constructed from tin-plated steel and features a fixed metal carry handle and a threaded brass screw cap. These cans were a staple of early motoring in the United Kingdom and were frequently repurposed as water containers for Vickers machine guns during the Second World War. The Pratts can retains an auction sticker for Lot 119 and a small paper sticker numbered 13.
