Lot 664: A Collection of Multiplier and Trolling Fishing Reels and Carrying Case
A collection of three large marine gastropod shell specimens of the species Melo amphora, commonly referred to as baler or melon shells. These specimens are native to the Indo-Pacific region and are characterised by their large, ovate forms and a crown of short spines at the apex. The group consists of one large specimen with a smooth surface displaying tan and cream-coloured banding, one smaller specimen with similar smooth features and well-defined apical spines, and a third medium-sized specimen which is heavily weathered. The weathered shell shows significant surface erosion and calcareous encrustations. The largest specimen retains a previous auction lot sticker from HCP Auctions South West, marked Lot 665, alongside a small piece of beige tape with a handwritten character resembling an M. These shells were historically utilised by indigenous populations as vessels for baling water from canoes.
