Lot 34: A Collection of Sterling Silver and Silver Plate Sugar Tongs
A collection of sugar tongs featuring both solid sterling silver and silver plate examples in various traditional patterns. The group includes two pairs of sterling silver tongs in the Fiddle pattern. The first pair bears London hallmarks for 1827, including the lion passant, leopard’s head, date letter m, and George IV duty mark, with the maker’s mark AH attributed to Archibald Hough. The second sterling pair bears London hallmarks for 1824 with the date letter i and maker’s mark JH. Also included are silver plate examples, with one pair marked EPNS for electroplated nickel silver on the interior handle. The collection showcases a variety of styles, from the decorative King’s pattern with shell and scroll motifs to simpler engraved and plain designs. Each pair is constructed with a bow-spring handle and spoon-shaped grips. No weight is recorded for the sterling silver items.
