Lot 7: A 1915 Charles Horner Sterling Silver Gilt and Shell Cameo Brooch
A sterling silver-gilt hallmarked shell cameo brooch by the English jeweller Charles Horner Ltd. The piece features a central oval-shaped, hand-carved shell cameo depicting a classical profile portrait of a young woman with long hair and a floral headpiece. The cameo is housed in an ornate frame with a scalloped, lobed border containing a series of small, circular raised settings designed to simulate the appearance of gemstones. The reverse is fitted with a horizontally mounted hinged pin and a rollover safety catch, alongside a safety chain terminating in a small ancillary safety pin. The reverse of the frame is clearly stamped with the maker mark C.H for Charles Horner Ltd and a full suite of British hallmarks including the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and the lowercase date letter q corresponding to the year 1915.
