Lot 98: A Collection of Twenty Nine Late 19th and Early 20th Century Stereoview Cards by Underwood and Underwood and Other Publishers
This collection comprises an assortment of stereoview cards, or stereographs, dating approximately from 1885 to 1905. The group features publications by several prominent firms of the era, including Underwood and Underwood, J. F. Jarvis, C. Bierstadt, Littleton View Co., and Strohmeyer and Wyman. Specific photographer credits include Geo. Barker and Bert Underwood. The subject matter is diverse, encompassing international topographical views such as the Great Sphinx in Egypt, Milan Cathedral in Italy, and the Vossevangen Hotel in Norway. American landmarks include Niagara Falls, with one card depicting the tightrope crossing of Signorina Maria Spelterini. Social and domestic scenes are represented through interior views of ballrooms, staged humorous genre scenes titled Bliss Disturbed and Giving the Children Their Suppers, and large crowd gatherings. The collection also contains ethnographic and rural studies, including views of a village in Tripoli and livestock. One card in the set depicts a staged racial caricature typical of the period’s minstrelsy-style humour. Many cards bear copyright dates ranging from 1888 to 1897.
