Lot 270: Late Victorian or Edwardian Carved Wood Fireplace Surround with Composite Stone Insert
This architectural salvage lot consists of a fireplace surround and mantelpiece dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The surround is constructed from a dark-stained timber, featuring classical carved ornamentation. The side pilasters are topped with circular carved medallions, and the central frieze is embellished with a carved foliate and scrollwork applique in the Victorian or Edwardian style. The mantel shelf is finished with a simple moulded edge. The insert is a three-piece construction made from a light-coloured conglomerate stone, possibly terrazzo or a similar composite material, with a speckled appearance and a central rectangular opening intended for a fireplace grate.
