Lot 683: Chinese Wooden and Woven Cane Storage Box with Guangxu Tongbao Medallions
A rectangular lidded storage chest of Chinese origin, dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The box is constructed with a wooden frame featuring rounded edges styled to resemble bamboo. The side panels are decorated with a diagonal cross-hatch woven pattern of cane or split bamboo. The wooden lid is inset with two circular metal medallions designed to resemble large Chinese cash coins. The inscriptions on the medallions read 光緒通寶 (Guangxu Tongbao), denoting the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (1875 to 1908). The chest is fitted with a dark-patinated metal flip-latch to the front and two simple metal hinges to the rear. The interior is lined throughout with a burgundy velvet-like fabric.
