Start price: £3

Estimated price: £3 - £5

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of late 19th or early 20th-century English vernacular Smoker’s Bow armchairs, also known as Captain’s chairs. Each chair features a continuous curved horseshoe-shaped back and armrest supported by a series of ring-turned spindles, a design characteristic of the Windsor chair tradition. The solid, thick-set wooden seats, likely elm, feature shaped front edges and are mounted on four sturdy ring-turned legs. The chairs are finished in a non-original, heavily distressed white over-paint. No maker’s marks or manufacturer’s labels are visible on the pieces. Both chairs currently carry temporary modern paper auction labels.
