Lot 104: A Large Chinese Blue and White Export Porcelain Lidded Baluster Jar
A large porcelain lidded jar of baluster form, decorated in underglaze blue for the export market. The exterior is painted with large circular medallions depicting dragons and phoenixes amidst stylised clouds, surrounded by a ground of foliate scrolls and geometric trellis-work panels. The shoulder and base are accented with decorative bands of scrolling diaper patterns. The matching domed lid is surmounted by a conical finial finished in a solid dark blue glaze. The base is glazed to the centre with scattered blue pigment specks and lacks reign marks or inscriptions. The unglazed foot rim shows naturally occurring iron spots and surface grittiness consistent with the firing process.
