Lot 473: A Set of Copeland Spode Rhine Pattern Blue and White Transfer-Printed Plates
A set of circular glazed earthenware plates with scalloped rims, produced by Copeland Spode. Each plate is decorated with the Rhine pattern, featuring a blue transfer-printed central landscape depicting a river scene with buildings, castles, and figures among trees. This central scene is enclosed by a wide, intricate border of scrolling acanthus leaves, floral sprays, and foliate motifs, finished with a fine dashed border at the outer rim. The reverse of each plate bears a blue factory backstamp with the word Copeland positioned above a shield-shaped cartouche containing the name Spode. Below this is the word England, and to the right, the pattern name Rhine. Impressed marks including the characters 36 and the letter O are also visible on the reverse of the plates.
