Lot 532: British School, Late 17th Century, Portrait of a Lady
This oil on canvas portrait depicts a lady in an oval-in-rectangle composition, characteristic of the late Stuart period. The sitter is portrayed in three-quarter view with dark, curled hair, wearing a low-cut orange dress with a white lace-trimmed chemise and a dark blue-grey mantle or wrap draped over her shoulder. The work is executed on a stretched canvas support, held by a wooden stretcher with a central vertical cross-brace. The reverse of the stretcher bar is inscribed with the numerals 1324 in dark pigment. An illegible rectangular paper label is affixed to the frame reverse. The painting is housed in a later 19th-century ornate gilded composition frame featuring scrolling acanthus leaves, diaper-patterned fields, and shell-motif corners.
