Lot 928: S. Francis Smithman, Maritime Print and a Mountain Landscape
Two framed artworks comprising a maritime print and a mountain landscape. The first is a commercial offset lithograph after S. Francis Smithman, depicting the steamship SS Great Britain arriving at South Street, New York, on its maiden voyage in 1845. The print bears a signature in the plate at the lower left and includes printed credits for the artist and a copyright notice for the s.s. Great Britain Project in the lower margin. It is housed in a dark wood-finish frame with a gilt inner fillet and a cream mount. The second item is a landscape painting, appearing to be oil on board, depicting a mountain valley scene with a central path. This piece is presented in a contemporary off-white frame with a linen-textured slip. Due to the commercial nature of the maritime reproduction and the significant condition issues affecting the landscape painting, the valuation is adjusted from general market statistics for this subject matter.
