Lot 1025: S. Francis Smitheman, The SS Great Britain Arriving at South Street New York, Offset Lithograph
S. Francis Smitheman (A.T.D., B.A., F.R.S.A.). A modern offset lithograph print titled The steamship The Great Britain arriving at South Street, New York, on 10th August, 1845 on her maiden voyage. The historical maritime scene depicts Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s pioneering iron steamship at a bustling New York pier populated with Victorian figures and horse-drawn carriages. The print features a facsimile signature in the lower right of the image area and formal printed text in the lower margin including the artist’s name, qualifications, and the title. A copyright credit for the S.S. Great Britain Project is located in the upper right corner. The work is presented in a wide cream mount and a dark-stained wooden frame with a decorative gilt inner slip.
