Lot 872: Oil copy of The Hay Wain by John Constable on Winsor and Newton board
An oil on canvas board painting, being a later copy of John Constable’s 1821 work The Hay Wain. The scene depicts a horse-drawn timber cart crossing a shallow stretch of the River Stour, with Willy Lott’s Cottage and a large timber-framed barn to the left. The work is rendered in a traditional representational style with a palette of muted greens, browns, and ochres. The painting is executed on a commercially prepared board. The reverse of the board bears a black manufacturer’s stamp for Winsor and Newton, Rathbone Place, London, stating Made in England and Single Primed. The painting is presented in a polished dark wood frame with a gilded inner slip. A contemporary auction label for HCP Auctions South West is attached to the frame.
