Lot 1000: A Vintage AVO Model 8 Universal Avometer in Leather Case
A vintage AVO Model 8 Universal Avometer in a leather case, accompanied by a cast iron dish and a collection of pre-decimal coins. The multi-range electrical test meter is constructed with a black Bakelite front panel and casing, featuring two large rotary switches for selecting D.C. Ranges and A.C. & $Omega$ Ranges. The central display comprises a mirrored analogue scale for resistance, current, and voltage readings. The front panel bears an embossed logo reading UNIVERSAL AVOMETER, alongside functional controls marked REV M.C., CUT-OUT, ZERO $Omega$, and ZERO $Omega times 100$. The unit is housed in a fitted brown leather carrying case with velvet-lined interior pads and includes several red and black test leads with spring-loaded clips. The lot also includes a small decorative cast iron dish with a scalloped edge and a perched bird figure on the rim. A group of four British pre-decimal coins is present, including a 1954 half penny with a legible inscription reading ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D. and other coins marked HALF PENNY and BRITT:OMN:REX. An adhesive white label on the case reads 999 and another on the dish reads 1080.
Condition report:
The Bakelite meter unit appears in good physical condition with minor surface dust, although its mechanical and electrical functions are untested (photo 2). The original leather carrying case exhibits significant wear, including heavy surface scuffing, cracking to the leather, and partial detachment of the straps and handle mechanism (photo 1). The cast iron dish shows heavy overall surface oxidation and rust (photo 3). The pre-decimal coins show typical signs of circulation wear and surface toning (photo 3).
