Lot 1123: An Antique Late Victorian Burr Walnut Cupboard Chest
An antique late Victorian burr walnut cupboard chest featuring a highly figured veneer finish to the top and front surfaces. The piece is designed with an asymmetrical upper section, divided vertically between a bank of two short drawers to the left and a single cupboard door to the right. This top section sits above two full-width long drawers, all supported by turned bun feet. The chest is constructed with burr walnut veneers over a carcase of secondary pine or deal. It retains its brass drop handles on stamped circular backplates, a central brass latch handle to the cupboard, and flush-mounted brass escutcheons. A modern white adhesive label is present on the top surface, which reads HCP Auctions South West Lot 1123 and www.hcpauctions.net.
Large-scale furniture items; exact dimensions are not provided.
Condition report:
The chest is in poor, distressed condition and requires professional restoration. There is extensive white surface bloom and mildew across the entire front veneered surface (photo 1). The top surface exhibits heavy scratching, scuffing, and substantial loss to the finish throughout (photo 3). All brass hardware is heavily tarnished (photo 1). The interior shows signs of dust, dirt, and general wear consistent with age (photo 2).
