Lot 246: An Antique Late Victorian Heavy-Duty Black Painted Wooden Strongbox / Safe
An antique late Victorian heavy-duty black painted wooden strongbox / safe of utilitarian construction. The chest features a thick-walled body with a recessed-panel hinged lid, finished in a heavily distressed black paint that shows significant wear. The interior is open and unlined, revealing a dark-stained hardwood construction, likely oak. The lid is secured with a recessed brass bolt-action locking mechanism, which displays age-related patina and tarnishing. A handwritten white paper label is adhered to the lid reading VINTAGE SAFE with a character below appearing to be a cursive letter B. Also present is a white adhesive auction lot sticker for Liskeard Auction Rooms, HCP Auctions South West, indicating Lot 246. A length of wire is currently attached to the lid for tagging purposes.
Large-scale furniture items; exact dimensions are not provided.
