Lot 620: A Pair of Antique Doulton Lambeth Floral Earthenware Vases
A pair of antique Doulton Lambeth floral earthenware vases, of ovoid form with short, slightly constricted necks and flared rims. The vases are decorated in the Faience technique, featuring hand-painted floral bouquets that include large anemone-style blossoms in shades of cadmium orange-yellow, pale pink, and cornflower blue. This vibrant decoration is set against a mottled, sponged ground that transitions from a pale cream-buff to a deeper lavender-brown at the base and neck. The interiors are finished with a clear glaze over the light-coloured clay body. Each base bears a circular impressed mark reading DOULTON LAMBETH ENGLAND, dating the pieces to after 1891. Additionally, there is a hand-painted character in dark brown pigment resembling the number 7 with a small serif, and faint impressed characters to the left of the main mark which are not clearly legible.
Condition report:
Both vases appear to be in good condition with no chips, cracks, or visible repairs to the ceramic bodies (photo 1). The high-gloss glaze is well-preserved across the exterior surfaces. The unglazed foot rims show expected minor surface scuffing and light discoloration consistent with age and contact with surfaces (photo 2). One vase retains a modern white adhesive label with the handwritten number 4667, and both are marked with a lot label 620 (photo 1).
