Lot 689: A Vintage Hand-Carved Wood Figurine of a Traveling Man
A vintage hand-carved wood figurine of a traveling man, rendered in a rustic, regional folk-art style. The piece is fashioned from a single block of dark-stained wood and depicts a standing figure with a full beard and a wide-brimmed hat, dressed in a long coat and trousers. The man holds a stylized, round object at his waist, which may represent a drum or a pack. The sculpture is defined by bold, angular chisel marks that create a faceted surface texture, typical of 20th-century Alpine or Black Forest regional carvings. The figure stands on an integral rectangular wooden base. A white adhesive label is affixed to the figure’s chest with the handwritten characters 1080. Condition report:
Superficial scuffs and minor loss of the stained finish are visible on the protruding edges of the hat brim and the base (photo 1). Significant dust accumulation is present within the deeply recessed carved areas (photo 2). Adhesive residue remains from the current inventory and auction labels. No structural cracks or evidence of repair are visible.
