Lot 699: A Vintage Painted Mixed-Media Biplane and Miniature Santa Claus Figure
A vintage painted mixed-media biplane and miniature Santa Claus figure, designed with a whimsical folk-art aesthetic. The biplane features a textured blue-painted fuselage, likely constructed from wood or resin, with an anthropomorphic face comprising painted eyes and a mouth. The aircraft is fitted with yellow-painted open-lattice metal wings and a multi-tiered circular propeller boss finished in red and cream. The rear cockpit area is decorated with green fabric and a miniature candy cane, while a flexible black coiled spring terminates in a metal ring on the starboard side. The lot includes a separate needle-felted Santa Claus figure presented within a clear glass cloche on a black circular base. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on either component.
Condition report:
The biplane exhibits visible adhesive residue at the junctions where the metal wings meet the fuselage (photo 1). There is slight bending to the delicate yellow metal lattice structures of the wings (photo 1 and 2). General surface wear and minor paint losses are visible, consistent with handling and storage (photo 2). The distressed finish and aged appearance are intentional design features and not considered damage. The glass cloche and felted figure appear to be in good order with no visible faults.
