Lot 821: A Vintage Medieval Style Cast Chess Set
A vintage medieval style cast chess set, comprising thirty-two detailed figures in silver-toned and gold-toned finishes. The set includes stylized monarchs, bishops, knights depicted as mounted chargers, turreted towers for rooks, and foot-soldier pawns. Each figure is mounted on a circular pedestal base and features hand-painted polychrome highlights in yellow, red, blue, and black. The underside of most pieces is fitted with a green felt protective pad. A white adhesive label is present on one piece reading HCP Auctions South West Lot 821 www.hcpauctions.net. There are no readable manufacturer marks or signatures on the figures or their bases.
Condition report:
The chess set is in used condition with visible wear. There is significant paint loss, chipping, and flaking across multiple figures, most notably to the yellow and red highlighted areas (photo 1). The cast metal surfaces show areas of light oxidation, surface rubbing, and patina consistent with age and handling (photo 2). The protective green felt pads on the bases show varying degrees of wear, with some slightly off-centre (photo 1). The set is structurally complete with all thirty-two pieces intact.
