Lot 987: A Vintage Mid-Century Yew-wood Sideboard / Shelving Unit
A vintage yew-wood sideboard / shelving unit, designed in the George III fashion and featuring a rectangular top with a moulded edge above a twin-drawer frieze. The unit is constructed from polished hardwood with decorative yew-wood veneers, and the drawers are fitted with twin brass swan-neck handles on shaped backplates. Below the drawers are two open compartments; the left compartment contains a single shelf, while the right compartment is an open storage space with visible drill holes for adjustable shelf supports. The unit is supported by a simple plinth base with moulded detailing. A small white rectangular adhesive label is fixed to the top right edge, printed with the numerals ‘987’. The face of the left drawer bears a small circular pink adhesive sticker with the handwritten number ’32’. No permanent maker’s marks or manufacturer’s labels are present on the piece.
Large-scale furniture items; exact dimensions are not provided.
Condition report:
The unit is in fair condition with visible signs of surface wear and use. There are numerous scratches, scuffs, and abrasions to the polished top surface and front edges (photo 1). A separate piece of unfinished plywood is currently resting on the top surface, which is not original to the piece (photo 1). The right interior compartment is missing its shelf, although the metal support pins remain in place (photo 1). There is a general accumulation of dust across all surfaces, and the base moulding shows minor impact marks and wear consistent with age (photo 1).
