A Victorian mahogany coal purdonium / scuttle, featuring a slanted hinged lid and a scalloped gallery back. The lid is fitted with a small brass ring pull and opens to reveal a removable black-painted metal liner with dual wire handles. The mahogany case is mounted with a substantial brass bale handle and a fitted metal bracket at the rear, which houses a matching brass shovel with a turned wooden handle. The piece is constructed with solid mahogany and mahogany veneers finished in a dark stain.
