Lot 590: An Egyptian Revival Bastet Cat Novelty Table Lamp
A modern novelty table lamp designed in the Egyptian Revival style, featuring a base modelled as the goddess Bastet in the form of a seated cat. The figure and its integral stepped square plinth are constructed from cast resin with a matte black finish, accented by raised gold-painted details including a patterned collar and faux hieroglyphic symbols around the base. The lamp is fitted with a conical shade made of heavy paper or parchment, decorated with a large blue, yellow, and black Eye of Horus (Udjat) and vertical columns of pseudo-hieroglyphic motifs, finished with a pale green fabric trim to the top and bottom rims. A black-finished metal support neck connects the resin base to the bulb holder. On the top surface of the base, positioned behind the cat figure, is a printed copyright mark comprising the ‘©’ symbol followed by the characters ‘W.L.’ and a series of numbers which are not clearly legible. The lamp is wired with a black plastic-coated power cord and a white UK 3-pin plug. This electrical item is sold as an untested decorative object and must be inspected by a qualified electrician before being connected to a mains supply.
