Lot 631: A Trio of British Second World War Campaign Medals with Box of Issue
A group of three British Second World War campaign medals comprising a 1939-1945 Star, a Defence Medal, and a War Medal 1939-1945. The 1939-1945 Star is a six-pointed bronze star featuring a royal cypher GRI VI surmounted by a crown, set within a circlet inscribed THE 1939-1945 STAR. The Defence Medal is a circular cupro-nickel medal depicting two lions flanking a crown above an oak tree, with the dates 1939 1945 and the legend THE DEFENCE MEDAL in the exergue. The War Medal 1939-1945 is a circular cupro-nickel medal depicting a lion standing upon a fallen dragon. The group is accompanied by three detached ribbons and the original cardboard mailing box. The box bears a paper address label with the legible handwritten and typed text Mr. BRICE Esq., Avenue, Honicknowle, PLYMOUTH, DEVON. A circular ink postmark is stamped to the upper left of the label, though the characters within it are not legible. The medals are presented on a modern decorative floral display base which is not contemporary to the militaria.
