Lot 50: A Quantity of Late 19th Century Antique Cut Iron Nails

This auction ended on 17 October 2026.

Start price: £5

Estimated price: £5 - £8

Buyer's Premium: 20%

A quantity of antique cut iron nails from the late 19th or early 20th century. Each nail is manufactured using the machine-cut process, resulting in a characteristically square, four-sided tapering shank and a flat, roughly rectangular head. The nails are constructed from wrought or cut iron and display the typical rustic, dark patina associated with aged metalware. This assortment is stored in a rectangular orange plastic tray. While the tray is a modern utilitarian container, a blue and white fabric measuring tape is also present, featuring printed markings including a blackletter manufacturer name reading DEAN, followed by MADE IN ENGLAND and the instructional text HOME SEWING AID ONLY.

Nail Length: 10 cm (approx. 4 inches).

Condition report:

The nails exhibit significant surface oxidation and heavy rust throughout, consistent with their age and material (photo 1). Surface pitting is evident across the shanks and heads, though the structural integrity appears largely intact with the shanks remaining straight (photo 2). The orange plastic storage tray shows minor surface dirt and wear but remains functional. The fabric measuring tape shows some staining and fraying at the edges (photo 2).
