Lot 182: An Indian Copper and Brass Caparisoned Horse Sculpture
An Indian decorative metal sculpture of a caparisoned horse, depicted in a dynamic rearing pose. The figure is constructed from sheet copper or a tinned copper alloy with visible seams and numerous circular rivets throughout the body. The horse is highly embellished with applied brass decorative elements, including a formal bridle, headstall with embossed floral motifs, and a large sunburst medallion on the neck. A wide breastplate is decorated with repeating circular floral patterns, and the saddle features a quilted lozenge-patterned texture with small embossed flowers in each diamond. Additional decorative plates are applied to the haunches and lower legs. A thin brass chain acts as a lead or rein, attached to the bit area. The tail appears to be made of a different material, possibly wood or a cast metal, and shows a darker finish. The sculpture is mounted on a plain, unpolished rectangular wooden block. No maker’s marks, signatures, or inscriptions are visible on the piece.
Large-scale decorative item; exact dimensions are not provided.
