Lot 20: A George V Levi and Salaman Sterling Silver and Cut Glass Vanity Jar
A sterling silver and cut glass vanity jar from the George V period, hallmarked Birmingham 1920. The item is of elongated oval form, featuring a heavy clear glass body decorated with a deep, hand-cut hobnail and diamond pattern. It is fitted with a removable push-fit lid made of embossed sterling silver. The lid is decorated in a late Victorian and Edwardian repoussé fashion with a central oval cartouche framed by scrolling foliage and floral motifs. The interior rim of the lid bears a series of struck marks: a maker’s mark reading L & S for Levi and Salaman, an anchor assay office mark for Birmingham, a lion passant symbol for sterling silver, and a lowercase v date letter in a shield for the year 1920. The central cartouche remains unengraved.
