Lot 22: A 1942 George VI UK Silver Florin
A George VI two shillings coin, commonly referred to as a florin, struck in .500 fine silver for the United Kingdom. The obverse features the left-facing uncrowned portrait of King George VI, designed by Humphrey Paget, whose initials ‘HP’ are located at the base of the neck truncation. The surrounding Latin inscription reads ‘GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX’. The reverse displays a crowned Tudor rose at the centre, flanked by a Scottish thistle and an Irish shamrock, with the royal initials ‘G’ and ‘R’ positioned to either side. The reverse legend carries the inscription ‘FID : DEF : IND : IMP : TWO SHILLINGS 1942’. The coin features a reeded edge and exhibits typical circulated characteristics, including a softened strike to the higher points of the crown and portrait, along with a layer of dark toning and surface contact marks consistent with a mid-20th-century silver issue.
