Lot 8: A Victorian Engraved Silver Plated Fiddle Pattern Sugar Tongs
A pair of silver plated sugar tongs in the fiddle pattern, dating from the Victorian period. The piece features elaborate floral and foliate scroll engraving extending along the outer arms, with a cursive monogram reading HB engraved upon the bow. The arms are shaped and terminate in oval, spoon-shaped bowls. On the interior of one arm, there is a series of four struck marks in rectangular and shaped punches. These consist of a six-pointed star or cross symbol, the characters J B C, a bird-like device with spread wings, and the letter B in a shield. These marks are consistent with the manufacturer John Batt & Co of Sheffield.
