Lot 653: Three Assorted Cast Iron Naval or Siege Warfare Projectiles
Sold for: £20
A trio of assorted cast iron projectiles, characteristic of 18th to 19th-century naval or siege warfare. The group comprises two large-caliber solid shot and one smaller grape shot or large musket ball. The largest specimen is of solid spherical construction with a heavily oxidised and concretion-covered surface. A significant portion of the outer delaminating layer has cracked away to reveal a smoother, denser iron core beneath. The second large projectile displays a similarly weathered, pitted surface with deep ochre and brown oxidation. The smallest item is a compact, dark spherical projectile with a more uniform, though still pitted, metallic surface. These items appear to be recovered from a maritime or archaeological context. There are no maker’s marks, weights, or foundry stamps legible on any of the pieces.
