A vintage Salter No 56 balance scale constructed from black textured cast iron with a removable brass pan. The counterbalanced beam mechanism features a central brass indicator and pivot assembly. The set is accompanied by an assortment of graduated weights in both imperial and metric units. The imperial collection includes three flat-disc cast iron weights marked 1 LB, 8 OZ, and 4 OZ, alongside four brass disc weights marked 2 OZ, 1 OZ, 1/2 OZ, and 1/4 OZ. The metric set consists of seven brass bell-shaped weights with integral handles, including two 200 g weights, a 100 g weight, a 50 g weight, two 20 g weights, and a 5 g weight. The scales bear a decorative brass maker’s plate on the central support, which is literally transcribed as SALTER, below that Nº 56, and below that MAX 2 KG.
