A 19th century mahogany blanket chest / coffer, featuring a rectangular hinged lid with a raised central panel. The front and side elevations are constructed with recessed panels set within a substantial mortise and tenon frame. The mahogany displays a rich reddish-brown hue and a straight grain pattern. The interior is fitted with a lighter-toned hardwood or softwood base and framing, secured by corner bracing. Hardware includes a brass escutcheon to the front face, a corresponding brass lock plate to the underside of the lid, and simple internal hinges. A metal stay is present to the right-hand side to support the lid when open. The interior retains remnants of a floral-patterned paper lining.
