A pair of antique mahogany side chairs from the Georgian period, exhibiting a transitional design between the Queen Anne and Chippendale fashions. Each chair features a yoke-shaped top rail above a central vase-shaped splat, which is elaborately pierced with scrollwork and heart motifs. The frames are constructed with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, featuring slightly splayed rear legs for stability. One chair retains a drop-in seat upholstered in a cream-coloured floral damask fabric, while the other chair is missing its top upholstery, revealing the interior construction of jute webbing and hessian over a rebated seat frame. The mahogany possesses a dark, dense grain and a naturally aged patina. Small adhesive inventory labels are present on the splats and frames but do not constitute maker’s marks.
