Lot 140: A Pair of Traditional Stone Staddle Stones
A pair of traditional stone staddle stones, comprising two separate pieces each: a tapered pedestal base and a circular domed capstone. The stones are hand-hewn from a natural limestone, appearing consistent with Cotswold stone in colour and texture, displaying visible tool marks from the manual carving process. The pedestals feature a square-profile base tapering upwards to a flattened top, upon which the mushroom-shaped capstones rest. Originally used as agricultural supports to prevent vermin from reaching grain stores, these examples demonstrate a rustic, vernacular construction. A green adhesive label is present on one capstone reading ’62 Ben’, alongside a white auction lot sticker reading ‘Lot 140’ and the URL ‘www.hcpauctions.net’.
Large-scale garden items; exact dimensions are not provided.
