Lot 761: A Late 18th Century Iron Bound Oak Dome Top Chest
A large iron bound oak dome top chest, likely originating from Northern Europe or Scandinavia during the late 18th century. The chest is constructed from substantial, wide oak planks with a rounded, dome-shaped lid. It features extensive hand-forged iron hardware, including wide vertical binding straps, protective corner brackets, and heavy iron swing handles to each end. A large, decorative pierced iron escutcheon plate dominates the front panel, protecting the internal lock mechanism. The chest is supported on later carved wooden bracket feet. The interior remains in a natural, unfinished state, showing the broad grain of the timber. A large iron skeleton key with a complex notched bit is present and functions with the internal locking bolt. A small white adhesive label reading 761 is applied to the front and right-hand side of the carcass.
