Lot 814: A Late Victorian Mahogany Shield Back Side Chair
A late Victorian mahogany side chair in a fashion dating from the George III period. The chair is constructed with a distinctive shield-shaped open back featuring a central pierced splat. This splat is decorated with four vertical bars flanking a central circular patera, surmounted by carved foliate scrolls at the upper corners of the shield frame. The upholstered seat is fixed to the frame with a border of visible brass-headed upholstery tacks along the lower edge. It is supported by tapered legs, including a visible spade foot to the front. The seat is covered in a heavy woven tapestry-style fabric featuring a repeating floral and foliate scroll pattern in muted tones of green, red, and gold on a cream background. No maker’s marks or manufacturer labels are visible on the wooden frame or the upholstery.
Large-scale furniture items; exact dimensions are not provided.
