Lot 839: An Assortment of Framed Artworks including Three Owl Studies by John Ball (Signed)
An assortment of framed artworks comprising various media and subjects. The collection includes three three-dimensional studies of owls, appearing to be constructed from layered paper or natural feathers to create a relief effect. Each owl study is signed John Ball followed by a circled P and is presented in a gilt-finished shadow-box frame with a peach-coloured mount. Also included is an oil landscape painting on board depicting a body of water and autumnal trees, set in a broad wooden frame with a linen-effect liner. A religious icon on a wooden panel depicts a bearded figure, identified by the Greek inscription Ο ΠΡΟΦΗΤΗΛΙΑC as the Prophet Elijah. Further items include a watercolour architectural study of a European cityscape, a framed decorative map of Cornwall featuring heraldic crests, and a straw-work or gold-foil composition on a black ground depicting a tropical landscape inscribed MALAYSIA. The lot is completed by a small print of a boat on water and a decorative calligraphic print. The artworks are housed in a variety of frames including gilt-finished wood, natural timber, and black-painted mouldings.
Condition report:
The collection is in fair condition. Several paper mounts exhibit visible foxing and minor discoloration. There is light surface wear and occasional scuffing to the wooden and gilt frames. The oil painting and icon panel appear stable.
