Lot 843: An Assortment of Vintage and Modern Stoneware Flagons, Ginger Beer Bottles, and Commemorative Glass Ale Bottles
This collection features a variety of stoneware and glass vessels. The stoneware includes a two-tone salt-glazed cider flagon with a brown top and cream body, transfer-printed in black for Perry Bros of Dowlish Wake, Ilminster, Somerset Cider. Also included is a cream-glazed cylindrical ginger beer bottle transfer-printed for J. Aspinall and Co. of Huddersfield. A cream-glazed flagon with a handle is marked Sherry in a decorative script font. The lot contains two modern two-tone stoneware cider flagons, one marked Band’s Scrum with a coastal scene illustration and the other for Symonds Scrumpy Jack, both with black screw-top caps. Additional stoneware items consist of several small ink or utility bottles in cream and brown glazes, a tall brown stoneware bottle with incised markings near the shoulder, and a small flared-rim pot. The glassware section includes three unopened commemorative ale bottles produced for the 1977 Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, with labels for Courage Silver Jubilee Strong Ale, Allied Breweries Jubilee Strong Ale, and a Celebration Brew. The collection is completed by a clear glass bottle and a green glass bottle featuring an iridescent surface patina.
Condition report:
The items are in varied condition. The older stoneware pieces exhibit characteristic surface pitting, staining, and minor manufacturing imperfections. Several of the smaller stoneware pots show chips to the rims. The glass bottles show wear and peeling to the paper labels, and the metal crown caps exhibit some rust. The green glass bottle shows significant surface weathering and an iridescent patina consistent with being excavated.
