Lot 864: Mid-century modern rosewood and teak top-opening storage unit, circa 1960s
A mid-century modern storage unit or low sideboard, likely of British or Scandinavian origin, dating to circa 1960s. The carcass and four short cylindrical tapered legs are constructed from a light-toned wood, such as teak or mahogany, while the top lids and front decorative panels feature highly figured rosewood veneers with a high-contrast grain. The top surface is comprised of four rectangular lids that open upwards on brass-toned metal hinges to reveal a partitioned interior. The interior is divided into four deep, open storage compartments of equal size, suitable for use as a record cabinet or blanket chest. Each lid is designed with an integrated, recessed finger-pull handle along the front edge. No maker marks, stamps, or labels are present on the item.
Condition report:
The piece is in generally good vintage condition but exhibits several signs of age and use. There is significant water staining and multiple circular ring marks visible on the right-hand side panel. The carcass and legs show scattered minor surface scratches, light scuffs, and small knocks to the edges. The rosewood veneers remain vibrant and appear well-adhered without significant lifting. One lid is currently misaligned or partially detached at the hinge and requires minor adjustment.
