Lot 961: Henry Alken (after), A Collection of 19th Century Colour Aquatints and Other Framed Works
A collection of framed works featuring a set of four 19th-century colour aquatints depicting stagecoach scenes in winter landscapes after Henry Alken (British, 1785–1851). The set comprises The Holyhead and Chester Mails, The Bruce Passing the Peveril Coach and Manchester Mail, The Brighton Mail, on Sunday, December 25, 1836, and The Liverpool Mail Near St Albans. Individual prints bear the literal inscriptions Drawn by H. Alken and Engraved by R. Havell, with The Brighton Mail identifying the publisher as R. Havell, 77 Oxford Street. These works are executed in the aquatint technique with hand-colouring and show clearly visible plate marks. The impressions are of fair quality and show signs of late-state plate wear. The set is housed in matching burr-wood effect frames with dark beaded inner slips. Accompanying the lot are four additional framed works, including an oval print of a lady with a greyhound and a small landscape dated 29 Sep – 00.
Condition report:
The set of four aquatints is in poor condition, exhibiting heavy foxing, significant toning, and pronounced damp staining, particularly within the margins. The impressions show evidence of late-state plate wear. The frames show minor scuffing. The four additional framed works show severe foxing and staining throughout.
